The Executive Branch of the Student Government Association is comprised of elected Council members and their appointed cabinets. Each member of Council and their respective cabinets are tasked with carrying out Constitutional duties relating to a specific function of SGA. This includes carrying out initiatives that serve the student body and searching for new ways to work toward the betterment of the campus.
Lobby Board
The University of Alabama Student Government Association’s Lobby Board is a collective of students dedicated to serving as advocates on behalf of the Student Government Association and students at the University of Alabama. Through their efforts, Lobby Board seeks to bring awareness to various political initiatives such as voter education and registration, higher education advocacy both within state and federal programs, and many more throughout all levels of government. Lobby Board partners with various organizations both on campus and within the Tuscaloosa community to promote these efforts, including but not limited to Vote Everywhere UA and the Women’s League of Voters, specifically to raise awareness for the importance of voter engagement in all aspects of the UA campus and community. Lobby Board works directly with the Vice President of External Affairs to bridge the gap between UA students and the surrounding community, encouraging both parties to express ideas and concerns for the betterment of Tuscaloosa as a whole. As a nonpartisan organization, The Lobby Board strives to embody every aspect of the Capstone, acting as the voice for every member of the community, no matter the adversities faced.

First Year Council
First Year Council (FYC) is the biggest and best way to get involved in SGA as a freshman. The University of Alabama Student Government Association’s First Year Council is a representative body made up of 65 freshmen whose ultimate goal is to improve the freshmen experience. Councilors serve as a representative voice for freshmen in SGA through the passing and implementation of legislation. Councilors are chosen to serve through a competitive application-based process. Applications are generally accepted from Mid-June to the beginning of September. At the beginning of the FYC session, FYC elects their own leadership in the form of the Speaker of FYC, the Secretary of FYC, and committee chairs of the eight standing committees. FYC meetings are structured by Robert’s Rules of Order, using proper parliamentary procedure. FYC meetings occur every Tuesday at 6:30 in the Student Center Forum unless otherwise specified.

From year to year, each First Year Council class distinguishes itself as a close-knit group passionate about UA and always excited to work together to bring each others’ big ideas to life. A willingness to serve and build consensus among others are trademark qualities of councilors we’re hoping to meet — as well as the drive to offer creative solutions to problems and the ability back those ideas up with research and understanding.
Think you’re up for it? Start working on your application here! We can’t wait to hear from you. For more information, check out our Instagram, @uafyc.
