TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — January 12, 2026 — In partnership with The University of Alabama Division of Student Life, the Student Government Association (SGA) has launched the UA Student Engagement Stipend, a new initiative designed to support undergraduate students by reducing financial barriers to academic, leadership, and involvement opportunities.
The stipend provides eligible undergraduate students with up to $150 to help fund experiences that contribute to their educational and personal development. Supported activities may include exam preparation for professional school, conference registration or travel, research expenses, club or honors society dues, and other approved engagement opportunities.
The initiative was developed following SGA Vice President for Academic Affairs Samantha Simmons’ participation in the SEC Student Government Exchange, where peer institutions, including the University of Arkansas and Vanderbilt University, shared successful models for increasing student access to enrichment opportunities. Simmons worked collaboratively with the Division of Student Life to adapt the concept for the University of Alabama campus.
“This partnership reflects a shared commitment to student success and access,” said Simmons. “The UA Student Engagement Stipend is designed to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent students from participating in opportunities that enhance learning, leadership development, and campus involvement.”
The UA Student Engagement Stipend is open to all full-time undergraduate students with demonstrated financial needs. Applications will be evaluated through a holistic review process conducted by a committee of students, faculty, and staff from across campus to ensure equitable and impartial selection.
Applications open January 12 and close February 12. To apply, students must complete an online application that includes a description of the intended activity and associated costs, an explanation of how the opportunity supports their growth, and a brief statement outlining their financial need.
Funds will be distributed through students’ MyBama accounts or, in some cases, directly to sponsoring student organizations. The UA Student Engagement Stipend reflects SGA’s ongoing commitment to fostering accessible, inclusive, and impactful student experiences through collaboration between student leadership and campus partners.
