The Try Tuscaloosa Internship Program is now open!

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In partnership with the College of Communication and Information Sciences (C&IS), The University of Alabama Student Government Association (SGA) is excited to announce the launch of Try Tuscaloosa, a new internship program designed to connect students with meaningful, hands-on opportunities across West Alabama.

Applications open today, September 2, and close September 21. Internships begin in January 2026. Students will apply, interview, and enroll for optional spring course credit in October.

Through Try Tuscaloosa, students will work directly with leading organizations in the region, gaining experience in communications, political science, and public administration. Interns will have the opportunity to receive compensation, contribute to projects that strengthen the Tuscaloosa community, and earn academic credit within courses of C&IS, political science and public administration. UA faculty will review each applicant’s portfolio and match selected students with organizations whose needs align with their individual interests and strengths. “My team and I are honored to connect talented UA students with Tuscaloosa and the broader
West Alabama Community,” said Samantha Simmons, SGA Vice President for Academic Affairs. “This project is an investment in the futures of our students and the state.”

Partner organizations for the inaugural year include:

  • Crossing Points
  • Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama
  • City of Northport
  • City of Tuscaloosa
  • Tuscaloosa County Commission
  • Tuscaloosa Downtown Merchants Association
  • Visit Tuscaloosa

By embedding students in high-impact roles, the program aims to prepare the next generation of
leaders while also highlighting the career opportunities available in Alabama, helping to retain
talented graduates in the state.
