TUSCALOOSA, AL – September 2026
The University of Alabama’s Division of Student Life is partnering with UA SGA to offer an increase in the UA Engagement Stipend for undergraduate students with a need for financial support in academic, leadership, and campus involvement opportunities.
The stipend provides eligible students with up to $150 to help cover expenses associated with activities that enhance their college experience, including student organization or honor society dues, conference registration, or travel required for curriculum credit, research expenses, and other approved academic or leadership development experiences.
This initiative builds on work launched by Student Government Association President Samantha Simmons last year during her term as Vice President for Academic Affairs to provide students with additional financial support for involvement outside the classroom. This year, SGA and the Division of Student Life are expanding the initiative by combining resources from both SGA and the Office of Student Life.
“We wanted to create a way to recognize and support students who are investing so much of their time and energy both in and out of the classroom. College is a significant financial commitment, and we hope this stipend can help ease some of that burden while supporting students who are going above and beyond in their academic and campus involvement. President Samantha Simmons began this work last year, and we are excited to continue building on it through a partnership between SGA and the Division of Student Life.”
– Madelyn Herwig, Vice President for Academic Affairs
“We are excited to partner with the Division of Student Life to expand financial support for students who want to make the most of their college experience. Students should not have to miss out on opportunities to develop as leaders or pursue academic experiences because of financial barriers. By working together, we can continue finding ways to put students first and make these opportunities increasingly accessible.”
– Anna Beth Frazier, Vice President for Student Affairs
Any current UA undergraduate student who can demonstrate financial need is eligible to apply. Financial need does not have to be demonstrated through federal financial aid guidelines.
Applications opened September 16 and must be submitted by October 23 at 11:59 p.m. Students should provide a brief description of their planned activity and estimated cost, explain how the stipend will support their academic, leadership or campus development, and describe their financial need.
Applications will be blinded and reviewed by a committee of student and faculty leaders from across the Division of Student Life. The review period will take place October 26-30, with final decisions announced November 6.
Students may use the stipend for more than one approved activity. Upon approval, funds will be transferred directly to the student’s account.
Students interested in applying for the UA Engagement Stipend can complete the online application by the October 23 deadline.
